May 5th, 2018 marked a great day in our community! 10,000 trees were planted at the former Ennismore gravel pit. Otonabee Conservation, Township of Selwyn and volunteers from Kawartha Waterways Scouts, Community 30 Guides, Ennismore Optimist Soccer, Husqvarna and TFC Soccer Academy planted 10,000 trees as part of the rehabilitation of a former pit! Husqvarna committed to plant 100 trees for every goal scored by Canadian Major League Soccer Teams which included the Toronto Football Club, Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club and the Montreal Impact. As a result 17,600 trees were planted across Canada! Husqvarna sponsored the purchase of 7,400 trees, and One Tree Planted provided the additional 2,600 making it possible to plant 10,000 trees locally. The tree species chosen are native to the area; Red Pine, White Pine, Eastern White Cedar, and White Spruce which will create a mixed and diverse forest habitat. “This level of support demonstrates a significant commitment to the environment and the community” says Mike Richardson, Manager of Recreation Services for the Township of Selwyn. “The property will greatly benefit from this reforestation project as it will enhance habitat, and provide connectivity for wildlife by linking the adjacent natural areas to the north and south which include portions of two Provincially Significant Wetlands”, says Dan Marinigh, CAO at Otonabee Conservation.
